(414) 367-9464Milwaukee County's Nineteen Communities
Milwaukee County was established by the Michigan Territorial Legislature on September 6, 1834, before Wisconsin was even organized as its own territory. The Town of Milwaukee itself was created the following year, in March 1835. For over a decade the county's jurisdiction stretched well beyond its current borders, covering most of what is now southeastern Wisconsin, until the land that became Waukesha County was split off as its own county in 1846.
Today Milwaukee County is made up of nineteen incorporated cities and villages, and it is the most populous county in Wisconsin. That single fact, one county made up of nineteen separate local governments, is also the reason roofing rules are not uniform across it. Each municipality sets its own building and permit requirements.
From Cream City Brick to North Shore Lots
The housing stock across Milwaukee County varies about as much as the county itself does. Cream city brick two-flats on Milwaukee's East Side and in Bay View sit a few miles from postwar bungalows in West Allis, a mix of pre-war and newer construction in Wauwatosa, and larger lots with more mature tree cover in North Shore communities like Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, Fox Point, and River Hills.
That range means there is no single answer to what kind of roof a Milwaukee County house needs. Roof age, material, pitch, and repair history all depend on the specific property, which is why an inspection comes before any recommendation rather than an assumption based on the neighborhood.
Roofing Permits Are Set by Each Municipality, Not the County
Milwaukee County itself does not issue roofing permits. Each of its nineteen cities and villages sets its own rule, and they genuinely differ from one to the next. We have researched the specific requirements for Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, and West Allis in detail; see our roofing permit guide for the full comparison, including what triggers a permit in each.

Milwaukee County Roofing Questions
Does Milwaukee County issue roofing permits?
No. Permits are handled by each individual city or village, not the county. See our roofing permit guide for how the rules compare across Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, West Allis, Whitefish Bay, and Shorewood.
Do you serve the North Shore suburbs?
Yes, including Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, Fox Point, Bayside, and River Hills, along with the rest of Milwaukee County.
Will I get the same service if my town doesn't have its own page yet?
Yes. Every roof in Milwaukee County gets the same inspection, photo-documented estimate, and straight answer on repair versus replacement, whether it's Milwaukee, Whitefish Bay, or a smaller North Shore community we haven't written a dedicated page for yet.
Do you handle insurance claims for storm or hail damage in Milwaukee County?
Yes, throughout the county. We document the damage with photos you can use to support a claim and can meet your insurance adjuster on site when that helps move things along.
