(414) 367-9464A County Shaped by the Lakeshore
Ozaukee County was formed in 1853, split off from Washington County. The first parcel of land in what is now the county was sold on September 7, 1835, to Daniel Wells, on the lakeshore in what is today Mequon. German, Irish, and Luxembourg immigrants settled the area heavily through the 1840s; by 1870, roughly seven out of every eight county residents were of German descent, a history still visible in some of the area's older building stock.
Wisconsin's Smallest County by Land Area
At 235 square miles of land, Ozaukee is the smallest county in Wisconsin by land area, even though it includes about twenty-five miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Steep bluffs along most of that coastline limited direct lake access early on, though the lower-lying ground around Port Washington and Belgium allowed harbors to develop, and limestone quarrying and fishing were early industries here.
What This Means for Ozaukee County Roofs
Mequon tends toward larger lots, more mature tree cover, and a higher share of premium roofing material such as architectural shingle and metal than denser parts of the metro. Cedarburg carries a genuinely older housing stock tied to its historic mill-town core, where some roofing work requires Landmarks Commission review on top of a standard permit. Port Washington has its own older lakefront core around the harbor and downtown, with added wind exposure near the water. The rest of the county likely follows a similar mix of housing ages, though we scope each property individually rather than assuming.
Roofing Permits in Ozaukee County
Permit rules in Ozaukee County are set by each municipality rather than the county as a whole. Mequon does not require a roofing permit for a standard re-roof unless structural changes are involved, and installing more than two layers of shingles requires structural calculations. Cedarburg and Port Washington both require a standard building permit for re-roofing, and a Cedarburg property inside one of its historic districts needs additional Landmarks Commission review. See our roofing permit guide for the full detail. Other Ozaukee County municipalities set their own rules separately, and we confirm the current requirement for your specific address.
